Backups via Disk Image?

Hi folks,

I just wiped my drive clean, reinstalled the OS, and reinstalled and configured all my apps.

Ah.....

My drive is as clean and orderly as it's ever going to be, so I'm wondering how I might back it up.

I'd like to back up the entire drive, including System etc.

I've heard and read about making a disk image of a volume.

Will a disk image of this volume preserve the _entire hard drive_ exactly as it is now?

Are these the steps?

1) Use Disk Utility to create disk image of volume.

2) Copy disk image to hard drive 2.

3) If desired at a later time, wipe hard drive 1 clean.

4) Copy Disk Image back to hard drive 1

5) Run disk image.

Anybody care to clarify or correct?

Many thanks.

AFAIK, you'd have to start with the installation medium in order to create a disk image of your main boot volume.

your best bet is to use Carbon Copy Cloner (available from bombich.com) to "clone" your entire drive to another drive (preferrably to firewire drive). Make sure in the preferences to create the clone as a "bootable" volume. You'll see it in the preferences. This is a great tool for backing up EVERYTHING.

Thanks guys. I got Carbon Copy Cloner, looks like just what I need. I really appreciate the suggestions.

This board is a great resource!
