I have an Ibook G4 that is about three years old with 60 Gb. I used my laptop on an average of 4 hours a day.
About two weeks ago, I started to notice that the computer was slowing down. When I tried to back up my system on (.mac to me.com) it was a disaster (partially Apple's problem). I never was able to back up the system. I had to leave for a trip and on the plane I had trouble booting the laptop. Later, I had trouble with some of my preferences. Tried again to back-up the system. I did the First Aid disk and it told me that I had a b-tree trouble and bad keys. I tried to fix it, but it said that it could not be fixed without the CD. I tried the CD but it could not fix the problem and when I took out the CD the computer would not turn in. After trying the CD again, it showed that there was no more hard drive.
After using TechTool, it is telling me that the surface scan will erase about 50% of my data due to bad blocks as of right now the hard drive is still not showing up.
This is the second laptop that I have with B tree trouble (never this bad).
What is causing the trouble? Do I need a new hard drive and how do I avoid bad blocks in the future?
