Battery not charging.

I just got a Mac OS X laptop about a week ago, and now the battery won't charge. I have to keep it plugged in at all times or else it instantaneously shuts down. I've messed with the energy saved and such, but can't figure out how to change it. Any ideas? Thanks!

First of all, check this is you have a macbook pro.
Also, what model laptop is this? How old is it? We'll need to know this to solve your problem.

If you have a Powerbook G4:

What happens if you press the button on the battery?

If you have an iBook, see this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58450

The laptop is a MacBook, and says it's a Mac OS X version 10.4.7, and I got it a little over a week ago brand new.

I pushed the battery button and nothing happens.

I clicked that last link and it says if there is a red X, then you need an update; the X on mine is black and has stayed so for the past couple of days, even though I've charged it overnight and kept it to the power source for hours. It also says it's charging if there is an amber glow, which there is.

I'll go ahead and try different outlets and removing and reinstalling the battery. Thanks for the advice.

It sounds like you have a defective battery. If it still won't work, bring it in. They should replace it for free, under your 1 year of free Applecare.
