Best free app to take place of Photoshop for Leopard 10.5.2?

What is the best free program that can do what Photoshop can do (or as much as possible) that is compatible with Leopard 10.5.2?

I know about GIMP, but it has some issues with 10.5.2, apparently. If it does work, then please provide a link to instructions on how to make it work with 10.5.2. Thanks.

LABachlr, I'm running the GIMP on 10.5.2 with no problems. Have you checked out Wilber Loves Apple? http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/ They put together some solid packages. Just make sure you update your X11 to the latest version (XQuartz 2.1.4). Oh, and if you don't already have X11 installed, you will have to run the 10.5.2 combo updater after you install X11. I hope this helps! I think the GIMP really is the best free option. I also like Pixelmator, but its not so free...

OK. Thanks. Which do you like better, GIMP or Pixelmator? Which is easier to use for the average user?

Also, X11 is already installed on her new Macbook that has Leopard. It says it is X11.app 2.1.1. I've already done all of the Software Updates for her, so she has 10.5.2. Do I also have to install the 10.5.2 combo update that Wilber Loves Apple lists on his site (http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...mboupdate.html), or did I get that already via Software Update?

If I do have to update X11, link please. Thanks.

Even though X11 is listed in the Utilities folder in Applications, do I still need to install X11 from the Leopard DVD? The reason I ask is Wilbert Loves Apple assumes that you need to install it. It does not note that it may already be on your system.

Also, can I install X11 from the Leopard DVD onto a Tiger system, or do I have to use the Tiger DVD?

Check in your Applications/Utilities or Applicatins folder if it's installed.
For 10.4, you need to use X11 from 10.4 - 10.5's X11 would be unsuitable (different frameworks etc).

I prefer the GIMP over pixelmator because it is a lot closer to photoshop in terms of functions, but it is definitely not easier to use for the average user. Even a minor OS update can potentially break it, so you have to keep on top of updating your XQuartz. For the average user, I would recommend Pixelmator or Acorn over GIMP, if you're willing to spend a little. They both have free demos i think.

Anyway, about your X11. Did you install X11 before updating to 10.5.2? If yes, then you can go ahead and update XQuartz to 2.1.4. But if you installed X11 after updating to 10.5.2, then you'll have to run the 10.5.2 combo updater (even though you're already running 10.5.2) - it has updates for X11.

To update to the latest XQuartz (2.1.4) check here.
