BIG PROBLEM with CDs and .img/.dmg

I have a big problem with Mac OS X on two Macs (my G4 at work and the one at home). Both have MacOS X 10.0.1, but the problem also existed in 10.0.0. Whenever I enter a CD or DVD into the DVD drive or I try to mount any Disk Copy files (.img/.dmg) MacOS X tells me that it doesn't know the format of the volume and offers me three options: continue, initialize, eject. Nothing helps.
Happens both with Classic started and shut down. The installation at my work G4 is fresh! Installed MacOS X, then upgraded to 10.0.1, no significant 3rd party software/system stuff installed.

PLEASE HELP! I CAN'T INSTALL ANYTHING OR OPEN ANY CDS!

I am logged in as admin, btw.

thanx

I can't read CD's at all now that I installed 10.0.1. Actually I think it was the v1.3.1 of the updater software that botched it. When I put a CD in, it asks me to initialize it. Yeah, right.
