from the sf chronicle today.
In a move that could weaken Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop, a federal judge said Monday that he will order the software giant to include Sun Microsystems' Java -- a technology Bill Gates once said "scares me to death" --
in every copy of Windows XP.
....If the emergency order survives the appeals expected from Microsoft, it will be easier for software developers to create programs capable of running on both Windows PCs and other computer platforms, including competing operating desktop systems such as the Mac OS and Linux.
As a result, both consumers and corporations would be more likely to consider competitors to Windows if the applications they want to use run equally well on alternative systems.
