A few weeks ago I noticed that when certain window were ontop, the unified toolbar of the window behind went white. This happens in only a few apps with certain types of windows.

For example in Mail it happens with the About and Address panel window, but not previous recepients. Screenshots attached. Can anyone please help me fix this problem?

I've tested in new user account and the problem still remains, and no I don't have any software installed that would change the look of the OS. I have the latest Tiger on a G4 powerbook.

That's not a glitch. (Although you _might_ consider it a bug...) The About-window is obviously considered a modal dialogue window, somehow, which has a different effect on the window behind it.

So you're saying you see the same whitening of the unified toolbar in Mail?

I'm sure I would have noticed it before.

I noticed the same behavior before. Modal boxes are the key. It is subtle, so you might have missed it.. I mean, usuall the front box has YOUR focus as well as the programs.. so.

Never noticed that before! Interesting... I wonder why apple went to the trouble of making the differences! lol

To tell the truth I was wondering what on earth you were going on about for a bit as I'd never noticed it and couldn't see anything 'wrong' with your pics!

Ah well - you learn somthing new everyday...!:)

It doesn't look right to me, becase the light grey to white gradient that I'm complaining about has color banding.

If this is indeed how it should be I cant quite understand how I missed it before.

I've always seen the banding but never noticed the plain white/light grey before - go figure! I also can't understand how I missed that, but am sure it is ok and totally normal!:)

Oh yeh - I'm also using the latest Tiger on a G4

I'm convinced it's fine and normal but to confirm - anyone else get this?

This is normal behavior, although it does seem odd that Apple chose to use this behavior in this instance.

Windows can have one of three states in OS X: main, key, and inactive. The key window is the window currently receiving keyboard focus — generally the one you're actively using. The main window is usually either the same as the key window, or the window that the key window relates to (for example, a save dialog or the fonts panel might be the key window while the document you're saving or whose font you're changing would be the main window).

As I said before, it's odd that Apple chooses this behavior here, since the about window does not relate to the Mail window. I think this is not in keeping with Apple's human interface guidelines.
