Black boxes around icons!!!

I seem to have the problem of an annoying black box that follows me around the monitor...

its like a frame that goes around the last icon/browser button/file i clicked on, and although doesnt seem to be affecting the performance of the machine, it is aesthetically doing my head in!!!

has anyone suffered this problem before, and can anyone offer me a solution to get rid of the dreaded black box?

You have somehow accidentally turned on VoiceOver, a Tiger screen reader for blind and visually handicapped Mac users.

To turn this off, use COMMAND F5 (a toggle to turn VoiceOver on or off). You can also use System Preferences, Universal Access to do this.
 
Open your Universal Access Pref pane, and turn VoiceOver off. See if that fixes it.
