Blu-Ray Burners for MacOS X

I need to get a BD Burner (external) to back-up files and create HD Video discs for show reels. The only one that currently advertises as Mac is the La Cie. Are there other cheaper/better BD burners that will work with Final Cut Studio (I know there is an export to Blu-Ray device button) and also allow me to back-up. I saw an item in one of your discussion groups where someone used an LG Blu-Ray burner. I ascertained from LG support that all their BD burners are designed to work with Macs as long as they are Plug and Play compatible. Do I need third party software such as Toast Titanium 11?

I really would like some help cos no Soft/Hardware makers offer transparent advice.

I don't think optical discs make for reliable backups. I'm sorry.

You gave an opinion. Can you give a reason? Did you experience a problem using an optical disk as a back up?

I heard about PowerDVD before, but I'm not sure if it works for Blu-ray buring. Maybe you can give it a shot.

PowerDVD is popular, and should do what you want. But - won't work on OS X, it's Windows only.
