Blue screen of death with working arrow.

Hey all,

Anybody has any idea how to solve the blue screen after start up problem? I have had some hard time with it so far and I am clueless of what's going on. So I hope somebody can help me.

I guess my computer has never not really been healthy for a couple weeks now. Recently, I just got rid off the problem of my PB wouldn't let me boot OSX at all ( I got the black screen with something like ... profile/etc: is not a directory or something like that) I got rid of that and my PB worked again for a couple of days until this morning when I was able to get in the usual MacOSx screen but then I started using Safari which constantly crashed on me and I ended up having frozen MSN messenger for mac (the latest version). Then my PB refused to shut down so I had to force it. Then I restarted again and ran fsck -y, the end message I got was something like "Fault Segmentation" It didn't even give me usual message like the file was modified. I guess there's something really serious with my PB now. I have a few questions to ask:

1. Would reinstalling from scratch help me with the problem?
2. Or would disk warrior help?
3. Any other ways I can take care of this blue screen with the working arrow ?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Regards,
Fon

Certainly sounds like something on the Hard Drive is messed up. You can run FSCK -y command several times, and hopefully after a few times, you will get a return message that it fixed the problem.

A reinstall is always an option, if your comfortable with doing with, and you have whatever you need backed up. From the sounds of your post, a reinstall may not be a bad idea.

If you have disk warrior available, again, certainly not going to hurt to give it a try.

The blue screen screen with the working arrow? I am assuming, you mean a screen where you have to choice the start-up volume for the PB. If this is the case, in system preferences, chose your HD as the start-up volume. I assume it is as default setting, and if your experiencing some problem with the HD or OSX, then a reinstall may be warranted.

If you chose to reinstall, of course, a totally erase and reinstall is the best option, especially if you have some issues with the system software.

Thank you so much for your suggestions here.

Dear Powermac: I tried running Fsck -fy so many times and the final message I got before the localhost root# again is always "Segmentation Fault" (After a couple feedback about misplaced directory or something like that) It didn't seem to try fixing my problem since it never ended up saying "file was modified". It is always "Segmentation Fault" and then back to the localhost line. That's why I am worried actually. The blue screen with the working arrow I have is the screen I got after the usual logging in screen with the blue bar. At this point, instead of it leading me to the usual and peaceful desktop with icons on it, it just freezes right there (plain blue screen with the arrow cursor that can still be moved around) I wish I could get to the point where I could choose something from the system preference like you said :(

The problem is also, I don't have anything backed up (I know this sounds horrible) But now that it happens, I guess I have to do anything to make my PB running again... I am not keen on reinstalling but if that's the last resort, I have to.

Dear Eric2006: The night before I was trying to get some security updates from Apple software updater, you think that is what messed my computer up?
I will try booting into safe mode and hope for the best. Thank you for your advice!!

If somebody out there knows how to fix it, I will really appreciate your post and of course thank you for helping me out!
