Boot from firewire cd drive

The cdrw drive on our snow iMac has failed - won't write and now struggling to read.

If I buy an external firewire cdrw, will the mac boot from it for discs like Norton, system re-installs etc?

Advice appreciated. Please and thanks.

I never tried by myself, but I think I read ppl did succeed in booting from a firewire CD-drive. Don't take this as a guarantee, but let me at least guarantee for one thing: if you use Norton, you will mess up with your system much worse than it is now. And trust me, it can get worse.
Good luck!

Do what? Boot from a firewire CD drive, or screw up their systems with Norton?

Computers manufactured after the G4 Yikes! machines have the ability to boot from FireWire devices, including CD drives. You may need to hold down the 'c' key while booting, or, if that doesn't work, try Shift-Command-Delete (it may also be Shift-Command-Option-Delete -- and that's the big delete key by the "+ =" key, not the little delete key by the numeric keypad). That will force the computer to look for external devices from which to boot.
