Boot iMAc from ibook

G3 Imac with failing cdrw drive.
Need to run Disk Warrior etc from cd.
Can't. Won't read.

Can I boot iMac from iBook - and then run the DW already installed on iMac... which should be ok as it's not trying to fix the boot volume?

I believe I could do it from firewire - if I could find the damn cable.
Can I use ethernet? Or Airport?

Yes you can do this.

Start the iBook up holding down the T key on your keyboard this will put your ibook in Target Disk Mode ie a Firewire HD.

Plug it into your iMac and you can now select it as your startup Disk.

I once tried the network boot, but I wasn't successful. So, my answer to your question would be No. :(
However, it is worth to try. Go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Network Startup.

Thanks.

If, having selected 'network' and it can't find it - will it 'eventually' boot from the HD? As it won't read cds - the option of booting from that is gone - and hence I don't want to be stuck with a mac that won't boot.

Just as I can force boot from cd by holding down the c key - is there a way to force it to boot from internal hd if network boot is selected?

holding the option key will allow you to choose the booting device. So, just test it with the network boot..

Thanks.

Didn't find 'network' - so successfully rebooted from hd.

I shall retry after weekend when I have a firewire cable.

If your G3 iMac is running 9, you could just start up with the shift key down (no extensions) and also start up with the "zap pram" key combo: command + shift + P + R. But be warned, you will be clearing your preference memory. I am not liable for any additional problems that may result…

It should be fine. :)

Then reboot again and try to "rebuild desktop" by holding down the command and option keys while restarting.

Might save you the trouble of having to use Norton which, by the way, is not the best to use. Try Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
