Boot problems

Cannot boot my 12" G4 Powerbook. I get the blue screen.... pin wheel....."loading OXS", then nothing, back to blue screen..... pin wheel.

Tried booting in safe mode, cannot get past password, although I know it is correect, it says loading then goes back to blank password screen, if I put in the wrong password, the box "shakes".

Tried booting with the disk, nothing happened, just got stuck in the drive, have now retrieved the disk, but still cannot boot.

Any ideas please?

If you can get the OS X disk installed try to boot with it holding down the "c" key. If you can get it to boot with the disk, go to the menu and run Disk Utility and repair the disk and run Repair disk Permissions. See if this helps.

You can also reset the system password by restarting from your system disc. Press C as your machine restarts with the system disc in the drive. Look for the option to reset the password. In a menu, I think.

If all else fails, and I really hesitate to recommend this, you can reinstall the operating system by booting from the system disk. Look for installation options and select "Archive and Install". This will preserve your data. Do not, obviously, select "erase". I have to caution you, **** installs can possibly cause data loss. Backup first ****

I'm using Roxio's Toast Titanium 7 to back up my machines onto DVD. Toast 7 allows you to backup to multiple DVDs. Very cool. And Toast does So Much More (tm)!

Let us know what happens.

Thanks for your help everyone, I actually took my mac to the apple shop in Miami ( a 1,200 mile round trip from the Turks & Caicos Islands where I live, I was that desperate) and the mac genius in the store had it for over five hours and couldn't do anything with it, he then as a last ditch attempt sugested I buy Disc warrior, which I gladly did and it worked like magic, I know have everything back, all my data and it was worth teh trip!

I also bought a G Tech 100 gig external 800 firewire hard drive and backed everything up, (should have done that before) lesson learnt.

Anyway, thanks for all your help and sugesstions.
