my drive will not read anything it chokes on it for a while then spits it out. does it just need cleaning? can i use a cleaner cd in my mac?

Yes you can use a CD cleaner. It should just have a micro brush to clean dust/dirt of the laser lens. If after cleaning the drive and it still doesn't work, consider having it replaced. Sometimes these drives just fail, it's a crap shoot though.
