Broken Hinge--What's best way to get a PB repaired?

Broke a hinge recently. Don't know if it's wear or damage, as my 15" PB goes everywhere with me and could have been damaged along the way. No Apple Care coverage.

My local Apple store will ship it to Apple to replace the screen and back/bottom of the computer. The hinge is integral parts of both, and apparently they must both be replaced, for a price of $700.

Anybody have any other suggestions? I'm located in Minneapolis, MN

That is bull imo. In my scenario (damaged hinge, too) Apple sent the Repair shop a new display but no actual hinge. Yet they still fitted the display on with no problem. I have a 12 inch PB and I really doubt the 15 inch would differ much in that aspect. Sorry, but $700 whatever nationality, is a rip off. They could EASILY just replace the hinge.

Well, you will first need some tools. Then visit a repair site like this or visit a local Apple certified specialist to see if they could fix it. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the part ($135) and DL'd the manual ($9.95) and we'll see how it goes. It doesn't look easy--given the epoxy bonding that holds the display case together--but also doesn't look like it's worth $700-$1,800 -- the range of quotes I got from Apple and a local retailer.

Satcomer........With your help I located the part, instructions, and tools -- and made the repair today in about 30 minutes.....and for around $160 instead of $700 minimum bid. Wasn't very difficult -- a few nicks and it's working like new. I only replaced one.

Thanks again.
