Broken powerbook lid catch

Hi folks,

I think it's futile, but... A few weeks back a was shutting my powerbook when i noticed it wasn't closing properly. When i looked the catch has detached from the screen and was sitting in the well by the trackpad where it normally locks in when closed. Its pretty maddening as i have to shut down every time i stop using the machine or go to work, no more close-the-lid-and-go for me!

Anyone got any clever ideas? The spring is still sticking out of the whole above the screen, ad the catch isn't broken or lost, just detached, but i get the impression anything on the screen isn't really serviceable.

Th machine is getting a bit slow for me now anyway, but i was holding out for a 12" macbook/macbook pro. Help me fix the old machine or justify a new purchase :).

Oh come on, you know Ora wants a new computer...

Go for it. You definitely won't regret it. I believe that a large majority of people would agree with me. Just take the dive, or go through the hassel and money of fixing a computer you were getting sick of anyway.

Also, I believe that these current MacBook laptops are going to be fast enough for a longer time than most project. I'm still using a 1Ghz eMac... I don't even want to think how much faster a MacBook is than this machine.

yeah but one thing you have to watch out for on the new macbook pro's is the wireless and bluethouh don't work like on the G4 PowerBooks. Apple had to replace a coworkers laptop because of this say that they know about. Also that is what you get for going Bleeding edge tech noe just cutting edge.

Edit: Oh. by the I'm useing a PowerBook G3 233 Mhz laptop runing 10.4.6 useing Xpostfacto. I will be upgadeing my CPU to a G4 500 MHz here soon because the way video is being incoded now a day. My G3 can't hang with it. Other then that I'm more then happy with my old 1998 PowerBook. Hay can't bitch got it for a $100 on ebay. Put 512 MB or ram in it and a old PC hard drive 100 GB in it run great other then the video.

Try those videos with a 500 MHz G4 before upgrading, camgangrel21. ;)
I have I have 450 Mhz x 2 G4 Power Mac and run just fine on there. and no it's not useing both CPU just part of one.

You can still put the PowerBook to sleep and schlepp it around. Just open Terminal and type:
sudo pmset -a lidwake 0

That's a zero at the end, not a capital "o". This makes sure that the PowerBook wont wake up until you press a button, or attach or detach a USB or FireWire device. I had to do this because my latch doesn't work properly, and the lid always springs open when I carry it around.

Hi folks,

sorry I was so slow replying, been ill then away from dsl access. Thanks for the replies, in particular elander's that looks like it might well save me a lot of trouble. Also, cheers Qion for helping me justify yet more spending. I did talk to a mate who does apple repair, though mostly on slightly older powerbooks, and it seems the problem is apple doesn't really support repairs to the screen/lid unit (they always advise replacing instead) and the catch tends to be in a sealed unit itself, not easily accessible even if you open the screen up.

I'm holding out for now on new purchases, as just moved apartment and am a bit short of cash, plus tempted as i am by the 15' MBPs, i just am hooked to the 12" case size, so much easier to travel with. I'll see hwo the hoped for 13" MBs are, else i'll have to wait for a 12" MBP, but then i will again be on a Rev A machine, which i promised to avoid after the bondi imac and this powerbook (wonderful as it has been).

thanks again,

o
