Browser unable to display web pages despite strong Internet connection.

I have an iMac with 10.6.8. DSL.

This is not a problem with a particular browser. All three (firefox, safari, chrome) yield the same results, i.e. nothing. Or to be specific,

"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" (Firefox)
"Safari can't open the page. / ...the server unexpectedly dropped the connection."
"No data received." (Chrome)

This happened right after I attempted to install an older version of Avira AV for Mac (version 1.0)

The system shows that I have a strong internet connection through either ethernet cable or Airport. Also shows an IP address.

Anyone familiar with this?

Check your Network/internet preference panel. Click on the advance button on the bottom. A new window will appear. In the TCP tab, Click on Renew DHCP Lease. Are you set to use IPv4 or IPv 6?
Check your DNS server as well. The numbers listed should be connected to your Internet provider or an open dns.
