Burn and fuzz

I have a dual 2 gig G5. I can run it for about 20 minutes, then it's starts to smell like something is burning. The screen fuzzes out and it shuts down. Power supply maybe? It runs fine up until the point where this burn and fuzz kicks in.

Power supply or processors overheating, one or the other. Perhaps even graphics card, but I would suspect the first two.

Check inside to make sure all fans are unobstructed and operating normally. Maybe even run it with the case open so you can narrow down where the smell is coming from.

Thanks for the tip.
I actually did do that. Funny though, when I run it with the case open the fans kick into high gear. Still "burns" after about 20 minutes however.

Time to go to the shop I guess.

That is completely normal operation. The fans are designed to run at full-speed when the case is open. The G5 has some serious air-flow design, and opening the case disrupts the airflow, so the fans run at full-speed as a fail-safe.

I hear leaving the see-through plastic liner on the G5 while the door is open will allow the fans to run at normal speed(s), but trying to smell through a see-through plastic liner is just as difficult as trying to smell through the aluminum case itself.
