Buying a brand new iMac 800!

"I can hardly contain myself!" - Stimpy. :p Alright, here's what I'm getting:
iMac 800 MHz 15 inch
256 MB RAM
60 GB HD
Combo drive
32 meg GeForce 2 MX
When I get the machine, I will upgrade my RAM to 1 GB for about $70. ;)
I am really looking forward to this machine since it will be my very first brand new computer! Of course I have to use my own money  but it will make it all the more satisfying. Of course this will be leaps and bounds over my old gumdrop iMac, and I really need the speed nowadays. I find myself wanting to create, but by the time Photoshop or Cinema 4D gets open, the inspiration is gone. Plus, I find my computer lagging seconds after I click things sometimes. It's time for a new computer anyway. :) What I'm using is around 3 and a half years old now, and has been just about discontinued. As much as I would really like to go with the 17-inch, my dad is kind of against me spending that much money. :p
Anyway, can you guys give me some feedback? It would be much appreciated, considering that I haven't had the time to actually sit down at one of these iLamps to try them out with all the stuff I use daily. How do your iMac 800's keep up with you? :)

must convince dad of the 17"

seriously...my university has a lab full of both (15 and 17) ...i am usually disappointed with the way the screen looks on the 15...seems less crisp than the 17 and the realty is much better on the 17 for obvious reasons.

on a side note, i kinda wish i could run that lab...even with my bare bones knowledge of sys administration i could do a better job of keeping those machines running as fast and clean as possible. it's an open lab so you can dl anything, the y are completely cluttered with useless programs and files...sorry had to get that out

about getting the ram upgrade...

Are you informed that you have obly one slot accessible to you? That means the ram inside must be replaced to 512 (normal ram) by an apple store or sth, and the outside ram u can add is laptop ram, which is really hard to get in 512mb and expensive

Just a thought ;) I have "only" 512mb in my iMac just cus of this

and well, I'm quite sattisfied with my iMac 700, not the fastest machine but I can still do what I want with it :) And that is ofcourse after adding more ram, 256 for OS X is just not enough

He is correct about the base ram not being user replaceable. So if you want to have a full gig, order it from Apple with 1 512 memory module installed, and then save up to get another 512 module. Those run about $140, at least that is what i paid for one.

An alternative for you to consider: I recently purchased a refurbished iLamp from Small Dog Computing. At the time an extra 512k was $89.
Concider a refurbished unit. You can save a little, maybe even enough for a 17 inch instead of a new 15 inch. Small Dog is a reputable company. The units come with a 1 year standard warranty and the are eligible for Applecare if you so desire. None of the 4 macs I have ourchased were bought new. All were factory refurbished units.

I have found tht my iLamp flys with 768 ram.:D

I love my 15in flat screen iMac with Super Drive. I like it much better then the 17in ones. But that might be because I think the 17in looks out of proportion. Enjoy your new mac. I love mine.

I've had my Imac for just under a year now and i love it.

I upgrade the ram to 768mb after much deliberation after reading of all the people breaking the clips fitting it,but it was easy enough.

Well, I finally got it. :D I'm very happy with the machine, but only after some network trouble that wasn't related to it. I'm copying all my stuff over now. :)
I hope to post pictures of the new baby soon.
