Cable Modem Help

Heya I'm new here and I have an annoying problem. We recently purchased a Motorola Surfboard 5101 for our very purdy iMac G3/600 SE [Had it since early 2002 my first computer...(since I was 12)] =]. Anyways, when I plugged in the Ethernet cord I get a message in Network Status saying "The cable for Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in". I know for a fact it's not the Ethernet cord, could it be the modem or something else? And can I use USB? Thank Ya.
 
USB is not intended as a networking protocol. It works in Windows because it has to, but it does not work well. Ethernet is a networking protocol.

As for your problem, I have never seen or heard tell of it. I have one queston:

Have you registered your new Surfboard's MAC address and serial number with your Internet service provider?
 
Oh woah, That was quick...Thank You. Now back to the problem...The answer is Yes. We had another computer (exact same one with the only difference being the RAM) and it worked without any problems. I don't understand why I'm having problems with this one. =[.
 
I gather that you are plugging your computer directly into the cable modem. This is not the best idea. You ought to plug your modem into the WAN port of a router and plug your computers into the router's LAN ports.

To your specific problem--Have you reset your cable modem? To reset, cut-off the power to your modem for 30 seconds. When power is restored, it is forced to get a new IP-address from the ISP. If you don't have a router, then you will have to follow this procedure each time you switch back to MacOS X. With a router, this is unnecessary.
