California bans spam!

I guess if the Post Office was involved in this , and there was a cost for emailing, like stamps, there would never be a law against it.

There will probably will be a number of loop holes in these laws just as there are in the Do Not Call Lists.

From the article
...unless the recipient had specifically requested it or had had a prior business relationship with the advertiser, such as a bookseller.
Pfft. All the spammers say that the consumers "opt-in" anyway, so they're still going to get away with it. Even though their e-mail lists are distributed all over the place.

Is this law even enforceable?

I guess we'll find out.

At least in this case they're holding the actual vendor liable, not just the advertising company. If I get an unwanted email ad from Acme Widgets - and I've never shopped there before - Acme Widgets gets fined $1000

Just another desperate idea to generate revenue for the state. If they really wanted to benefit consumers they'd make the fine payable to the consumer that was violated. :)

It's called "telemarketing calls" when you get it over the phone, I'm sure you get plenty.

I'm not sure how this bill is going to work, or if it's going to work. I mean sure, you can target the companies advertised in spam messages, but you'll never be able to get the spammer himself unless you go through a lot of hoops.

Everybody should just use Mail.com, I get no spam at all.

I signed up my mail.com account with everything that needed an e-mail address that I came across and it's completely loaded up with junk. ;) Lots of gambling sites and such!

The *do not call* list goes into effect soon - i am buying one of those
compressed-air boat horns to use on telemarketers that
call me after the law takes affect.

Hehe, I've thought about that. Or tell them to shove their thumbs up their asses. :D

Ricky, I have a separate (Mail.com) address for just that purpose.

arden, that'll only work as long as there aren't that many people with that email domain. Once a lot of people have it, you'll start getting spam there.
