Can Font Book handle lots of fonts now?

Is anyone using Font Book with lots of fonts? By "lots" I mean thousand of fonts.

As we all know, Font Book under Panther was incapable of handling a lot of tons efficiently on even the better machines. Just wondering if that is no longer the case.

Also, if anyone IS using a lot of fonts under Tiger's Font Book, what about on older machines like DP G4 800-1GHZ level? What about on Power Books or iBooks?

I want to use Font Book, but only if it's going to be fast enough on all my machines. Otherwise I'll stick to Suitcase.

I put about 800 new font collections in Tiger last night. It was slow, froze once (I may just have lost patience and killed it) in the middle of one transfer. Once they were in it is working ok and fonts were available for other apps. cheers ian

I still believe you shouldn't have them all activated. I haven't read about it being majorly better... If you import many fonts, I suggest to keep them off until specifically needed.

i've only installed one font so far in font book 2 ( the only font i was using at the time, i only have one brief i'm currently working on) and illustrator had real problems locating it. i had to promt it every time. grrrr. seem s to be something to do with duplicate fonts, but it was two different, similar versions of the same font. disabled one and it seems to be working a bit better now
