Hi Folks, this is my first post so take it easy (and yes i did search ) ;)

Okay, i have a gigabit ethernet g4 with dual 450 mhz cpu. My friend has offered me the dual cpu from his MDD g4, its a dual 1.0 ghz... So i guess you can see what the question is!

Can i swap the new g4 cpu into the old g4 motherboard andget a speed boost?? i would sure love to do this, but im guessing it is not going to be easy :(

I have some experience of hacking around inside computers so thats not putting me of, only i know the mdd is a 167 bus and im only on 100, but if i did work i would get a sweet upgrade for zero cash.. hoorah...

can some one give me any info on this situation!

thanks in advance.

It should be easy enough to try. I upgraded the CPU on my G4 / AGP, and all I had to do was take out 4 screws, and the processor was out. I doubt it will work, but it's worth a try. Don't force anything, though..

Unless you'd consider a Mac mini, that is. But I'm repeating myself. If the free upgrade works, that's fine, but spending that amount of money on old hardware doesn't feel right for me.

Especially with the intel minis, I would just get a new system for that price, and get the latest chip. Now, if the upgrades were.. say $150 and $200, I would go for it. But they're not.

Hmm, i had a look through the stuff on the link you gave me. There is some guys getting excited about jumping 50 mhz in speed so i think my idea is a little to far fetched...

Im a little worried about frying something so might just get hold of the cpu off my friend but hold on till i can maybe get a good idea of what will happen :)

Maybe i will look into those 1 gig plus cpus upgrades, i have seen a few on ebay going for £100.00 to £150.00 for like 1.2 / 1.4 thats not a bad price i think.

thanks for the interest guys.

well, according to xlr8yourmac, the mdd cpus will not work in any other g4's but the mdd, and i believe the qs. your mac is too old for that cpu, being a gig-enet mac. i'm afraid that as far as using apple cpus, there is little you can do as far as faster ones. the best thing is to goto owc and see what upgrades you can buy.

but if you really want to try an apple cpu, then read here. you'll see that you have to provide extra power to the cpu card for qs cpus, and remove one of the ide connectors off the mobo to be able to use any da or qs cpu. so the fastest cpu that you could get from apple that would be plug and play is dual 500. so i think the best thing is to get one from owc.
