can i upgrade from 10.2.8 with a download or do i have to purchase Panther? everything is becoming obsolete.

10.2.8 is years behind, you should go and purchase a copy of Tiger, then download the 10.4.6 update via Apple's website.

No, you can't. You must purchase "major" OS upgrades, which are upgrades from 10.something to 10.something-else.

Incremental updates, like from 10.2.something to 10.2.something-else are free, but if the number immediately after the 10 in the version changes, it's a paid upgrade.

Depending on the age of the hardware (and you using 10.2.x says something about it...) I'd definitely go with Panther instead of Tiger. Panther is leaner and Tiger doesn't really help speed-wise, I'd say. Panther is as "snappy" as Tiger, and there's only some features missing from Panther. (And sadly one can't deselect Spotlight at installation time or things like that...)

fryke-
I am an older G4 (400).
God knows how, but I am still running fairly well with added RAM and a HD.
Panther 10.3 and then do the upgrades is best for my machine?

i need to upgrade to 10.2.8 from 9.2 can you all help me please do u have anything that you all could enail me

CD-ROM set: can run on DVD-less macs

DVD-Rom: one convenient disc.

that's the only difference as far as i am aware...

yeah ... that's the only difference, really. If you _do_ have a DVD-ROM and don't see a reason why you ever _wouldn't_ have it available for installing that particular machine, I'd go for the DVD version.

Tracydiaz- You should almost surely buy the CD-ROM set, as I doubt your G4 has a DVD drive that can read the Panther DVD discs. (If it does, however, buy the DVD) And yes, Panther would be best for that machine -with updates-.

Kc8ydog- Either search our forum (my recommendation), or start a new thread with your question and a lot more details about your hardware.

Yes I do have a DVD drive.

It will read the Panter disks then correct?

Sounds like I should get the DVD then.

I sure do appreciate the advice from everyone.
Thank you, truly.

The only reason I said that was because some of those G4 models had DVD-RAM drives, which are an entirely different animal than DVD-ROM/R/RW drives. My G4 with a DVD-RAM drive cannot read a Panther install disk.
