OS 9 had this simple method of setting your modem to auto answer and when you dial into that modem it allowed (with username and password of course) you to be part of the network once connected. This used to be only ARA, then apple expanded it to provide PPP so even windows machines could connect.
I do not see anything like this in OS X, has this not made it into the OS yet?
