Can no longer access https websites

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computers so I need some help. As of 11 Nov, I was no longer able to access any secure sites (email, banks etc) on either Safari or Firefox, both of which were the most recent editions. I've not had any problems before. I was a bit lost and I've been looking at all kinds of websites to try and sort out the problem, but to no avail. I was advised to look at disk utility and it said I needed to repair the HD by re-installing using the OS X disk. It's made no difference. I've tried checking the Secure Web Proxy box in System Preferences, but it wont hold. Can you help?

What page errors do you get? Eg. 404, denied access, etc.....

Something has happened to your network preferences. Also could have spyware/adware that is trying to redirect. Try iAntiVirus from PCTools for Macintosh, there are two versions, a free one and a Pro one. Download the free one, run it and see if anything comes up.

Thanks for that. I don't get any error messages, only a timeout. There have been no network preferences changes. The preferences are as per factory default settings and have never been fiddled with. I have checked the secure web proxy box and inputted an https URL for my bank to see if it would let me on to that particular web site, but that has made no difference. I don't have my 10.5 disk to hand so I've been unable to use the software you suggested so I'll have to wait until I get my hands on it. Maybe that will give me some answers.
