Can scratched DVD damage system?

I was curious if a scratched DVD that I had would read. After inserting it in my lacie DVD burner to mount the disc images on the DVD, I got an error message saying that the disc was damaged and might damage the system if I opened it, and asked if I wanted to open it or not. I chose not to, out of fear, but was wondering if this is indeed possible. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
I've never heard of this, but I suppose if the disk was severely damaged, or if you were going to try to install something from it, it might be a problem. I wouldn't worry, but good luck getting data off your scratched DVD.
