Can you copy portions(clips) of a dvd as it is playing on the monitor(screen). Is there a free application that could do this? The idea being to copy a segment of the dvd that is less then 10 minutes to post on youtube. DVD in question is not copyright protected.

If you're running Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion," then Apple has taken measures to prevent doing this with screen-capture utilities.

You may be able to do it with iMovie (which should be included with your Mac, depending on when you bought it) and the free program Handbrake (available with a super-simple Google search).

Use Handbrake to convert the DVD to a format that iMovie understands (MP4, probably), then use iMovie to trim the video to just the specific section of video that you want, and export.

Thank you for getting back to me. I solved the problem by taking a .vob file out of the TS-VIDEO folder of the DVD, taking it to MPEG-Streamclip and converting it to .mp4, and then editing & shortening the .mp4 clip while still in "streamclip". I believe I could have just edited the .vob file in "streamclip" and then exported it to .mp4 format. After exporting the file to the desktop it was easy to drop it into youtube.
