when you get the -44 error, is that when you're trying to start the very begining of the installation on the iMac?

Are you getting that from the Mac OS 9 "Install Mac OS X" application?

The -44 error raises a concern about the health of your drive. If I were you, I would bring TechTool Pro for a spin before trying to install OS X. I'd bet 10 (potato chips) that the cause of your problem is the hard drive.

If you are notified of the error in OS 9, the cause is :
Code:
-44 wPrErr Disk is write-protected; Volume is locked through hardware
according to this good site : Apple Error Codes Online. If this is the case, then you know what to do, since you locked it in the first place... ;)

Otherwise, I'm sure TTP will find the problem.
