Cannot connect two iMacs via Airport

Network consists of D-Link router (provided with Verizon FiOS), and D-Link "range extender". Intel iMac talks directly to the router, iMac G5 connects via range extender. This network has been working for many months and nothing was changed except upgrade of both machines to OS X 10.5.5.

First symptom was that the G5 could not reach the printer attached to the Intel. Testing showed that file sharing and screen sharing no longer worked either. Since sharing is seldom used, it's possible that the loss of connectivity occurred before the upgrade to 10.5.5, but my working hypothesis is that the upgrade caused the problem.

Both computers have Internet connectivity, no problem. Airport icon indicates strong signal; iStumbler reports strong signal.

Neither computer can ping the other, using [name].local. SOMETIMES ping reaches the other computer using IP address (192.168.0.101 and .102), and sometimes no connection.

Each computer appears by name in the other's Finder "Shared" list. I changed the computer names and the Finder lists were updated. So the Finder knows the other computer is there but when I click on "Connect As..." the connection fails with the message, "The server may not exist or it is not opertional at this time."
