Cannot log-in to IMAC

Hi--

My son can no longer log-in to his Imac. Somehow he tried to download some software and computer locked up while he was trying to change password.

Bottom line, old password does not work.

He cannot find the original DVDs that came with computer. In fact, I think he got rid of everything.

What do we do?

Thanks.
Dad

What do you mean by he got rid of everything? Did he format the disk (which deletes everything)? Or did he just throw everything out?

If so then fixing his computer would be like fixing a car which you don't have parts for and no tools even if you did.

While any scenario is possible ... 'Somehow he tried to download some software and computer locked up while he was trying to change password.' - is questionable.

Regardless, one must always keep near their computer (Mac or PC), the discs supplied by the computer manufacturer. Period.

'What do we do?' - purchase a retail copy of the version MacOS X he currently has installed; or, if the Mac is capable - a more recent MacOS X release.

Alternatively, find someone with either - the same model as your sons iMac and borrow the disc(s), or a retail copy of the same or later version of MacOS X as is installed on the iMac.

By booting from the purchased or borrowed 'Mac OS X Install Disc', the password(s) can be changed.

Also, making a copy of the borrowed disc(s) would be prudent.
