Hi,

I just bought and installed Panther (10.3.2) and when I went to re-install Mac OS 9.2.2 ... my computer will not start up from my OS 9.2.2 cd. I have tried starting up from the cd by holding down the "c" key, i have tried by selecting the OS 9.2.2 cd from the Startup Disk menu, and i have tried starting up from it by holding down the option key and selecting the OS 9.2.2 cd. In each case it just loads up and sits at an empty great screen. My system set up is as follows:

Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002)
Dual 1ghz
1.5GB SDRAM
2 Internal Hard Drives (1 80gb Seagate, 1 80gb Maxtor)
Apple SuperDrive
NVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600
AirPort Card installed
Boot ROM version 4.33f2

The OS 9.2.2 cd that I am using is the original disc that shipped with my computer.

I still need at least classic support (which currently I dont have). Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions ?

any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks very much, take care

You may need to reinstall panther when you are finished with this trick, or at least I had to do it with Panther server...

Boot in OpenFirmware (Command - Option - O - F, I think)
Type these commands in very carefully... this may or may not fix the problem.

reset-nvram
reset-all

The computer should reboot. Make sure panther still loads, then reboot with the OS 9 CD in the drive, hold "c" and hopefully it should work. This has fixed many of my problems, and does not kill of any info you already have saved in the system (other than when I had to reinstall OSX Server Panther.)

You may also want to boot back into OpenFirmware and run these commands also, if the first run did not work.

set-defaults
reset-all

good luck!

Also, if you hold down the Option key before the Mac chime, there will be a boot screen that comes up. Give it a few seconds to check all the media in the system (HD,Ex Firewire/USB & CDROM) Then select the CDROM (there should be an icon of the OS 9 logo. Then click the arrow to the right of it.

Good luck again!

You can also boot from the Restore CD and just install Classic. It is what I did on my G4 and it worked fine for my Classic apps without a full blown OS 9 install.

thanks for you help guys, it just wont seem start from up any OS 9 cd though. i ran those commands in the open firmware, i also tried reseting the pram. as far as booting from the software restore cd's... it wont start up from that because it is os 9.2.2. it will start up from a 10.1 , 10.2 , or 10.3 cd without a hitch... but absolutely refuses to startup from any cd with OS 9 on it

well.. again... thanks for all your help and suggestions, i really appreciate it

I am curious because my G4 will not boot from 9 either, it's the design of that model. but my restore disc does boot it, into X.

its just frustrating cause my G4 came with 9.2.2 installed and it came with a 9.2.2 cd. and just to be sure i checked on apple's website with my G4 models compatibility with 9.2.2 and it checked out fine. not to mention it use to start up in 9.2 just fine

Starting about the time your Quicksilver was made Macs would only boot from the copy of OS 9.2.2 that came with the machine[/b]. Generally that means the copy that is on the Software Restore CDs. :(

well after about a million repeated attempts, for whatever reason, my computer finally started up from my 9.2 install cd, and i got it installed on to a disk image for use with classic. so this will work for me at least for now.

big thanks to you guys for all your time and effort, i really appreciate all the help. thanks, take care
