Cannot start up my Mac

Help...I am new the the "Apple Experience" and probably don't know that much. My I-Mac G5 was working away quite nicely until I had some problem with my internet connection. I was going to ring my ISP for help but decided to shut down and re-boot before doing this (and i did it all the correct way).

When I tried to restart I get a kind of grey screen with a black box saying (in several different languages) that I need to restart my PC and to press the Power button.

Sounds easy enough, but when I press the power button it turns off my Mac, press it again and it starts to boot up but just until the same screen - I get stuck in some loop.

I dug my User's Guide and for a similar problem it said to hold down the Control key when I start up. I did this and all appeared to go well as I got to the screen described (click on the HD icon and then the right arrow) but after this it still just takes me to the same message described above. (It doesn't seem to register that I have clicked the HD icon, ie I can't see that it quickly depresses ... I am sure I am making no sense...

Anyway, tried this many many times and one time I got a huge long error message on screen that I wrote down but will summarise:
System Failure: CPU=0; code = 00000008 etc etc
Backtrace terminated - unalighed frame address 0xFC0087B1
Proceeding back via Exception chain etc etc etc
Backtrace terminated - unalighed frame address 0xFC0087B1
Exception state (sv=0x2D3ECC80) etc etc

Can anyone suggest anyway around this? I can re-install OS-X (and I know how to get that up) but I had just put some photos on my PC that I stupidly didn't back up and I don't know whether this will delete them - so I want to explore all options before going there.

Any help would be much appreciated - unfortunately even though I work for a software company, I exist in a world of PC users. Thanks in advance!!

Boot from your OSX Install disc (put it in the tray and hold down the C key when you boot). When the Installation window has finished loading go to the menu up top and choose DiskUtility. In that window, choose your disk and
1. Repair Disk (if problems are encountered do it again until all is OK)
2. Repair permissions (until no problems are found -ignore the "We are using special permissions…) message.
When everything is OK, quit the DiskUtility and then the Installer. The computer should automatically reboot. How did that work?
