Cannot start up

I have an older Power Mac G3 (tower) that I want to get running on OS9. It was running 8.6. I want to initialize the drive and start from scratch.
Ok heres the problem, it was booting up ok in 8.6, but would not boot from any CD (8.0, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1 CD's). The CD drive does work.
I replaced some basic system files and now it wont even boot at all. HELP It gets to the point of about to load extensions etc. and just freezes on a grey screen. I have tried extensions off etc.
how can I get the CD to boot?? any suggestions?
what can i do in programmer mode?

Did you try inserting the CD, going to the Startup Disk Control Panel and using that to select the CD to start up with?
What kind of OS CD's do you have? If you have iMac OS 9, it will not start up the tower. You need a general OS CD, not a specific model unless it is for the Tower G3.

yep tried a variety of OS Cd's from 8 through 9.2.2, I did also try other cd like iMac but to no avail

Try resetting the PRAM when you try to boot it up. Hit the power button, then hold down Command +option +p+r. Hold them down until you hear at least three separate startup chimes. release the buttons and see what happens.

Which reminds me... do you get a start up chime? What do you get on your screen? Do you have a Norton Utilities CD? Try starting up with that.

yep I tried all of those before, i do have nortons but still wont start from CD
i get the start up chime, but then it goes to a grey screen just before the system and extensions are loaded, and freezes

Try - remove all external devices except monitor(printer, scanner, any usb devices, use ADB keyboard and mouse) reset pram 5 times (let startup chime 5 times before releasing, then hold C key with startup CD in place.) Hope it works! :)
