Canon Gimp-print problems

Have just connected my trusty(ish) old Canon BJC-85 to new ibook but the print quality is appalling - it prints as if it is on "draft" setting - yet there is no option to change this on OSX (not that I can find anyway). Please help - is there any answer - other than biting the bullet and buying a new printer?
 
This works! Thanks - Any idea how I can change the default to black cartridge though instead off having to do this every time I print a doc??
