Can't access iTunes transferred to external hard drive - help!!

My internal hard drive was full, so I bought an external 250 gig hard drive. I successfully transferred all songs to external. Also copied iTunes folder to external.

However, I can't automatically access my iTunes now. Have to 'open' or 'play' via external hard drive before they can be accessed via iTunes. A real hassle, given extensive collection.

Any advice on shortcuts? Input much appreciated!!

This might do it:

Go to "iTunes Preferences," then click the "Advanced" tab. Click the "Change... "button next to "iTunes Music folder location" and select the folder where all your music is now located.

The "iTunes Library" file (keeps track of ratings, playlists, etc.) will still be located under:

yourusername/Music/iTunes

on your boot hard drive. Just leave that there.
 
A quick word of thanks for the advice. I've since needed to use your info twice, and both times it worked like a charm. Thanks for helping to eliminate my frustration !!
