Can't boot from my tiger cds

I have the cd version of Tiger and I'm trying to install it over Panther on my g5 powerpc. The problem is that I can't set the startup disk to my DVD from the system preferences (I have a Pioneer DVR-106D). I can see it on the startup disk preferences and apparently can be selected but when I reboot the system it just boots from my hd as usual. I assume that the installer tries to set it automatically for me when I run the disc 1 and asks me to restart, but that's the frst thing I've tried without any positive results.

Pressing C doesn't work, it just boots my system as usual. When I boot with Shift I can only see my HD as the unique startup option and so I assume that the bios is not enabling my dvd drive as bootable. But then , why can I see the cd boot disk from the startup disk preferences?

I also tried my panther disks and nothing. It seems that I can't boot any cd or dvd although I don't have a bootable dvd disc to try it.
 
you mentioned pressing c. are you holding it down basically from point of power on until you see the apple?

edit: re-reading your post would suggest you did this sorry....
 
Hm... Strange. You know and I know that this should "just work". (...) I'd try to reset the PRAM and NVRAM etc. and then try again. Also try to boot holding down the option-key. This should bring up a screen showing you the disks you can boot from. If the CD doesn't show up there, I'd say the machine doesn't see it at boot-time for some reason, which would be the reason why it doesn't boot from the CD in the first place...
 
I would have to say that if he did not buy his copy of 10.4 on CDs form apple that, 1; That they have been got off of the internet and if so the DMG files may have been bad or he did not brun the disk right. 2; If they are from apple then I would say whats going on is that the disk has gone bad. Apple has been know to ship bad pressed CDs and DVDs before. But this sounds as if this just a case if a bad brun. and so the disk has all the info for installin 10.4 but does not have the boot part on it. I know my frist copy of 10.4 on DVD was this way. I got it off the net but did not Brun it the right way. and guess what, I have a $3.00 costter. But I rebruned the right way it worked. I loved to OS so much that I run out 3 day later and buy a copy on DVD and on CDs. I had to retrun the CDs 2 times to Apple because the frist 2 copys where bad. The frist set would not boot. The 2nd set would not mount at all.
 
Since the original Panther CDs don't work either, I doubt that the problem is related to anything you're mentioning, camgangrel21... But you're right: The only reason for him to try CDs instead of a DVD is that he's trying to use a CD set which was bought for and used on another computer, really. And that's illegal.

But now this thread's about a PM G5 who can't boot from CDs, obviously. So let's treat that.
 
I've tried with the option key and nothing, the drive (with the disc inserted) is not listed. I've also switched my drive's jumper from slave to master since I've read that this (slave position) may prevent booting a cd or dvd but still nothing. Well, I don't know how to reset PRAM or NVRAM so I can't try this but I will do some research although I don't think that this is the cause.

BTW, now I'm only trying with my original panther discs (which I've already tested with another mac). :rolleyes:
 
Is this "Other mac" a powermac G5 as well? The reason I say this is because some install disks are machine specific - you can't install OS X from an iBook install CD to an iMac, for example. Are you sure that you havent gotten install CD's mixed up with the other mac's install CD's? What does it say on the install disks? I believe that machine-specific installations are grey CD's, and general installation CD's are black, with an "X" through it (at least for tiger)
 
Apparently my dvd drive is the problem. Most of my archives are in DVD, but when I try to copy some files from one of my cds the problems begun. Somehow I can read DVDs without problems but not cds. Do dvd combos have different lenses for cds and dvds?
 
Thats strange - most DVD drives also play CD's. Have you checked to make sure the firmware is up-to-date?

Is this a mac edition of the drive? When I looked up your drive online, I only saw a PC version. It should still work anyways, but who knows?

Have you ever been able to read/write CD's?

I hv an imac G5 (1st generation) and i'm currently peusing an ibook that while typing jumps to various lines -- so excuse the tyos since i'm trying to beat the colcok and not lose any more pstsl.

help, anyI'm sorry this is so difficult to read. In short: imacG5, reinstalled Tiger (keeping userIDs and files); now, booting up is vi
 
I'm assuming the install you performed was an Archive and Install. Usually you don't want to move over any system files since they might have been the cause of the problem. Usually just backup your documents and then perform the Archive and Install.

After you perform the install, download the Combo Updater for your system from Apple's website. Sometimes the Delta Updater (usually smaller in size compared to the Combo Updater) tends to cause some when updating. The good thing about downloading the Combo Updater is that you can update to 10.4.6 from any version without having to upgrade incrementally in version numbers.

Also, make sure that the only peripherals connected to the Mac are the keyboard and the mouse when performing the install or when updating.

Unfortunately, I well over 200Gigs in scripts and apps that I've purchased online and backing up (for now) isn't possible since iBackup won't work w/o an administrator password. Yes, I've made some progress; however, It's not possible to do very much w/o Administration capabilities.

Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully you won't give up on the Mac completely.

Are you typing this on another computer since it looks like you're posting normally?

As for support, that's what we're here for. Now that you do have a system that's working fine, can you please give us more details about the problem if you're still willing to resolve it?

I you do want to resolve it, I recommend that you post a new thread in the appropriate section so that people will be able to see it. Posting your problem that's unrelated to the originator's post constitutes hijacking a thread which makes it harder for people to want to help you.
