Can't Boot from OS X Install Disc

I'm trying to install OS X 10.0.3 on a G4/400 (Yikes). It won't boot from the install CD. Upon restarting I get a gray screen that just sits there. After removing the CD the screen stays gray until I hit the reset button to reboot.

The machine boots from a MacOS 9.2 CD and currently has 9.2.2 installed. It was previously running OS X 10.0.3 but the OS was removed due to hard drive space. Recently an internal HD was added and the firmware was upgraded, but this is all that has changed since OS X was previously on the machine.

Repeated attempts to boot from both the 10.0.3 CD and the 10.1 upgrade CD have resulted in the gray screen. Even inserting the CD and switching the start up disk through the 9.2 control panel doesn't work. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. :D

Hrumph. Both the 10.0.3 and the 10.1 CDs are hosed, you say? Do you have access to another Mac to see if they work elsewhere?

fortunately, the discs aren't hosed. it was a RAM chip that was causing the problems. we'll have to get a replacement chip.
