can't connect to apple.com

i'm totally stumped.
This is a bit long but I will try to include as much as I can from the get go.

i recently had to install a new (40gb samsung hard drive on my iBook g4 1.07GHz running OS X 10.3.3
the install went relatively smoothly and i figured out how to set up my internet connection both by directly connecting to my NETGEAR router(cable connection) with ethernet AND with my airport extreme. Both worked fine before new install/new hard drive.

of course after connecting to the internet the software update ran immediately and automatically. and it also stalled...after about 10 minutes. after about 2 and a half hours and it not changing i forced quit it.

then i restarted my system and tried to run software update again. no go!

error message: software update can't connect to the update servers. make sure you can connect to the internet...

i AM on the internet. as long as i don't want to go to any site that is apple!
i try to go to apple.com i get:... cannot connect to server "www.apple.com"
i have downloaded firefox. still not able. and i CANNOT update my software!
Tried opera…no go. IE…no.

i have run disc utility. i have fixed permissions. i have run disc utility from boot disc. i have repaired disc.

If I go into system prefs I can change things in network and sharing, but with every change I have the spinning beach ball for between 5 and 25 minutes before it is released and the change is noted. I can then click or unclick another option and go through the wait again.

i have played like crazy with “network” in system pref. (this is where I think the problem lies) but don’t know what it could really be that I need to change. I have turned on internet sharing. I have turned off internet sharing. I have turned on file sharing….i have tried all my inexperienced mind knows. And it sucks.

I have tried to click on the “firewall” button in sharing. It tells me that I need to turn off the other firewall software…of course I have to wait 12 minutes with a beach ball after clicking on “firewall” to get this message.

Anyone else know what to do?

thanks!

For the Firewall problem, do this;

Close the sharing control panel
Open terminal
type sudo ipfw flush
give your admin password when asked
type yes when asked if you are sure you want to flush
Close terminal

Then try Apple.

yahooty!

it worked! my softare is updated.

thank you!

BUT i have found that if i want to connect to apple again after once logging off or shuting down i have to "flush" again.
how do i keep the firewall from starting up at "start up" or should i even do that?

again,
thanks!

Check your Accounts PreferncePane>StartupItems and see if there is anthing in there related to a Firewall you may have installed.

Have you updated to 10.3.9?

Hi again,

updated to 10.3.9

long again, but i think sometimes more is better than less.

i just got rid of everything in the StartupItems.
wasn't really sure what some of them were, but none seemed firewally.
-task scheduler from Office 2004(ms) and some other ms Office not necessary things and something called magic windows.
oh, and Archive Search from Stuffit and Stuffit AVR

restarted the computer.

same situation.

went to Accounts PreferncePane>Sharing>Firewall

(nothing is checked on the Services pane)

got the beach ball for 8 min and then the message that i have another firewall running and i need to turn it off. then the firewall pane opened but is greyed out and it says Firewall Unavailable

ipfw flushed and then ok again.

i also have some strey icons on my desktop from who knows where. maybe they have nothing to do with this firewall thing..

i have the "Network" blue globe sitting there and it won't eject
also a ".DS_store" and ".localized" ,the icons are just a sheet of paper.

Xupport tells me that the apple firewall is "on" and Xupport firewall is "off"
it also has an empty ipfw.log
this is the "firewall protocol" if i list all active rules
65535 allow ip from any to any
-i've done nothing else in Xupport as i just downloaded it yesterday and never used it before. wanted to wait to have someone teach me first...

how do I find out what firewall is running?

Thanks a biliion for your help!

oops! it doesn't happen whit list all active rules but:

actually this is what happens after i hit flush in xupport
"firewall protocol"
65535 allow ip from any to any

if i flush from Xupport. it works as well.
now it says my apple firewall is "off" as well.

hmmm.....
