I'm trying to connect wirelessely via a D-Link router however, my mac says that the airport is connected but it also says that the "airport has a self assigned ip adress and may not be able to connect to the internet." What does this mean and how can I fix it?

By the information you gave us it's quite tough to say anything.
Here some things you have to note:
1. Connect the mac via ethernet cable first.
2. make sure you have no filters on and no encryption activated on the router
3. make sure your wan connection (internet connection) on the router is set correctly and the status is on "connnected"
4. Try to access the internet over your mac still using the ethernet cable
5. leave all network settings on your mac on auto
6. enable your airport card and first try to access the router and then the internet
7. setup MAC filters and WEP encryption.
Good luck!
