Can't Delete Address Book Contacts/Groups

Hi there - I got my first Mac 5 days ago, and I'm having a problem with deleting contacts and groups from my Mail 2.1.1 (752.3) Address Book.
There doesn't seem to be a delete option - am I missing something very basic here..?
