Can't delete files.

I've got a couple of files on my desktop that my system (OS 10.2.8) won't let me delete. They are incomplete software (.sit files) that crashed my browser mid download. When i try and put them in the trash I get an error message that says they are being used by a task and so can't be moved to the trash. I have quit all applications and tried restarting (and rebuilding the PRAM) but still can't get rid of them. They aren't doing any harm it's just f***ing irritating that I can't get rid of them!!!

Anyone got any suggestions?

cocktail has a force empty trash utility. get it here

i am not familiar with the terminal but some people on this forum will be able to tell you a command line to empty trash (try searching the forums, it must've been mentioned before)

thanks for the link, only problem is i can't actually get the files in the trash in the first place.

Open a Terminal window (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
Type "rm" and a blank space
drag one of the items into the window: the path and filename should compare in the window
press enter

If this doesn't work because of access privileges, try "sudo rm" which will ask for your administrator password.
