Can't enable vacation

Hello,

I need a little help. I am trying to enable the vacation program. I initialized the database, created the .vacation.msg file and then made the .forward file as follows....

\spiney, "|/usr/bin/vacation spiney"

The following things happen.

1. the I get the email, this is good

2. The sender gets the following back
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
"|/usr/bin/vacation knussear"
(reason: service unavailable)

3. This shows up in the syslog

May 10 12:07:14 biodiversity smrsh: uid 501: attempt to use vacation spiney

Does anyone know how to fix this???
 
someone correct me if i m wrong, but sendmail must be running for vacation to work?

to you have sendmail turned on in hostconfig?
 
Nevermind, it turns out that sendmail uses a very restrictive shell that is not allowed to run executables from /usr/local/bin.

I got something running with procmail instead.
