Cant erase hard drive with boot CD

When I boot up from CD
I select disk utility and the wheel keeps spinning
I left it for 5 hours thinking it needed more time
I just want to erase H/D
Seems like when I re-install choosing to erase and reinstall
I still see some old applications in application folder

Would Disk warrior allow me to do this?

Could I format H/D in the consul
I guess I would be asking it to destroy itself

PS: Install CD is a legal copy
 
If you wish to use Mac OS X with certain applications (Adobe CS2/CS3), then you will want to avoid using the UNIX file system. Some applications are not compatible with that format.

I would highly recommend formatting the drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
