Can't install OSX on partitioned drive?

I partitioned my MacBook Pro's hd using Apple's disk utility and now the installer won't let me install OS X to the volume. The error message is "You can not install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume."

Any Help would be appreciated.
 
How did you format the partition? Did you format it as Mac OS Extended? If not, that's how you have to format it.
