Can't install Tiger internal Maxtor

System: G4 Desktop Digital Audiol 768

2 internal hard drives: IBM 60 and Maxtor 80

I could not upgrade to Tiger from Panther on either drive. Apple suggested to set both drives to cable select. For this to work, however, I had to disconnect the Maxtor internal drive to install Tiger on the IBM drive. I can't however, install Tiger on the Maxtor (which seems to be working correctly otherwise) - whether connected as the only drive or in tandem with the IBM. Maxtor tech help was polite but no advice how to resolve this issue.

Has anyone else run into this annoyance?

I returned the drive to Maxtor and received a replacement.

Tiger installed on the new drive.

Apparently, Tiger sensed a defect, and wouldn't install on the old drive.
