after updating from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 i can no longer install any updates when i try it says "x is unable to be saved" where x repersents the update. it is like this with every update

What method are you using to install updates?
Are you using Software Update, and those errors occur when you attempt to download an update, and the update won't even install?
Have you restarted your Mac, then try to install the update before you open any other apps?
Have you run your Disk Utility/Repair Permissions?
Check in your system.log (in your console) for other errors at the time when you attempt to install the update.
Try downloading the 10.5.8 combined updater from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866

Then, try the installs - only from your Software Update.
Does the Combined 10.5.8 update also fail?
Then, your next step will be to reinstall from your OS X 10.5 install, using the option to Archive & Install. When that completes, then run Software Update until your system is fully up-to-date.
