can't mount new external HD

Hi, I hope someone can help. I've got a new external HD that I'm trying to mount using firewire, but it will not mount. Does anyone have an idea what I might be doing wrong? It is a new travelstar HD that I've put into a 2.5" enclosure. Thanks

Does Disk Utility see the drive? Did you format it? You say it's brand new.

Disk Utility does not see the drive so I'm not able to initialize the hard drive. The drive is a HITACHI Travelstar 5K100 100GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive.

Sometimes external drive cases require you to set jumpers on the drive other than what they'd be set were they used internally.

How did you jumper the drive? Some of my enclosures require the drives to be jumpered as "Master", and some of the drives I use have special jumper settings for "Master without a Slave" and "Master with Slave present."

The drive is hooked up directly to my G4 Ti 1ghz powerbook.

The problem appears to be the enclosure, OWC is replacing it. Thanks for the help everyone.
