Can't open dmg files in 10.2.6

I'm trying to help a friend diagnose a problem he's having on 10.2.6.

For some reason, he can no longer open .dmg files. Here's what he wrote:

Whenever I try to open a dmg file, quicktime wants to open it instead of Disk Copy, but of course that doesn't work and I get an error message. And when I open up Disk Copy and try to open it, I get this error message

"The Mount Image operation did not complete. (-8816) The file does not have a recognized file type."

This happens to him on all .dmg's, so I don't think it's a corrupted file.

He's rebooted and all that.

Any ideas?

try in terminal:
hdid foo.dmg

maybe that will give some more specific error information

and if it's still not clear try:
1. repairing permissions
2. setup a new user account and try there

Btw, did you test those dmg files on your system to make sure those files are not faulty?
