Can't open iMovie '08 :(

I'm on a MBP with leopard 10.5.6 and all the latest software updates. I had been using iMovie now and then with no problems until today. Now when I open iMovie it says 'camera detected' when there is no camera attached (or anything else). It then starts 'generating thumbnails' but crashes EVERY TIME. There is no way to tell it not to generate the thumbnails so iMovie is completely unusable for me. I've googled the problem but can't find any info on it: most of the problems people have relate to the slow speed of generating thumbnails rather than crashes.
Anyone have any ideas about what to do?
 
Did you ever disconnect a camera while it was loading it?

Maybe try deleting the preference file of iMovie,if that won't work,reinstall iLife.
